No one wants to drive around in a dirty car. This is why the demand for paint protection film, or Clear Bra, has skyrocketed.
Before you choose to install these protective films, though, you may be wondering how to clean and care for them. They do keep your car looking brand new, after all, so you should make sure you're taking care of them.
We want to help. Below, we're going to go over how to clean paint protection film and how to care for it to ensure a longer lifespan.
You may be wondering, "Why do I even need to clean my paint protection film in the first place? Isn't the film there to protect my car?"
The Clear Bra film does have many protective benefits for your vehicle. However, it won't keep your vehicle from getting dirty over time.
Bug splatter and bird droppings left on your film can erode it over time. These acidic substances will leave your car's paint exposed to the elements. Remove these contaminants from your car's PPF as soon as possible, or you risk long-term damage to your car's paint job.
Also, regular cleaning keeps your car looking as fresh as the day you drove it off the lot! After all, what's the point of owning a beautiful vehicle if you can't show it off?
Finally, a regular cleaning routine helps you find trouble spots in the film quickly. This allows you to contact your professional installer and get it fixed before the problem worsens. It's better to have to do some minor Clear Bra repair instead of a full replacement!
In order to clean and care for your paint protection film, you will need a few things. Using the proper tools ensures that you'll avoid causing damage to your paint protection film during cleaning.
The best cloth to use is either a microfiber wash mitt or a microfiber cloth. While both are made of the same material, using a wash mitt will make it easier to reach the nooks and crannies of your vehicle.

Microfiber cloths should be used for both washing and drying. Never use a paper towel or other form of harsh cloth or towel during washing or drying. The abrasive nature of these materials could dull or damage the Clear Bra.
If possible, use plain water to clean the paint protection film. Avoid using a pressure washer if you can, but if you must use it, stand at least a few feet away from your vehicle and use a low-pressure setting.
If water isn't doing the trick, you can also use a mixture of regular dish soap and water on the tough-to-clean spots. For extra cleaning power, you can also add a small amount of white vinegar to the cleaning solution.
There are also many commercial cleaners on the market that will get the job done. Avoid cleaners that contain a Naphtha solvent or other petroleum distillates, as these will cause damage to the film.
First, wash the film with either plain water or your chosen cleaning solution. Use the microfiber cloth to gently wash away dirt and debris. Always wipe the film with a damp cloth, as the friction from a dry cloth could cause damage.
Next, rinse the film thoroughly with water. Make sure no dirt or debris remains on your vehicle. If you plan on waxing the car, do so after this step; double-check to make sure the product you're using is safe for use on Clear Bra.
Finally, allow your car to air dry, or dry it gently with a soft, clean microfiber cloth.
Wait to do any cleaning or maintenance on your paint protection film until at least 48 hours after application. If possible, wait a full week before cleaning it for the first time.
While some people use commercial car washes with no issues, they're not the safest option for luxury car protection and cleaning. It's better to take the time to wash your car manually to avoid any possibility of damage to your paint protection film.
This is also why you should avoid using a pressure washer on your paint protection film if you can. No matter what, avoid spraying directly on the edges of the protective film. The pressure from the water can cause the edges to lift away from the paint, and there's no way to get them back down except to take your vehicle to a professional installer.
Avoid any actions that will put undue pressure or abrasion on the film. Tools like scrubbing sponges and bristled brushes will introduce friction to the film, causing damage. The same is true of harsh chemicals and power buffers.
If you notice any bubbles or ripples in your paint protection film, do not try to remove them yourself. Instead, take your car to a professional who can safely remove the bubbles without damaging the film.
By following these simple steps, you can keep your paint protection film looking great and help it do its job of preserving your car’s paint job. At Solar Shade Window Tint, we are here to help!
